The Hazard

Mold Is a Health, Liability, and IAQ Problem.

By the time you see it, the exposure has already been happening. Visible mold is a symptom — airborne spores, the actual exposure pathway, are invisible, odorless, and present before any surface growth appears.

Visible mold is a symptom. Airborne spores — the actual exposure pathway — are invisible, odorless, and present before any surface growth appears.

Common Genera IRIS Identifies

Cladosporium

Most common outdoor/indoor — elevated levels signal moisture

Aspergillus / Penicillium

Water-damaged materials — allergenic, potential mycotoxins

Stachybotrys

“Black mold” — wet cellulosic material — mycotoxin producer

Chaetomium

Chronic moisture — often found with Stachybotrys

Basidiospores

Indicator of wood decay — structural damage signal

Alternaria

Water-damaged building materials — potent allergen

IRIS identifies all major fungal genera across air, surface, and bulk samples.

Health Effects of Mold Exposure

Respiratory

Asthma exacerbation, chronic cough, wheezing — especially in children and the elderly

Allergic

Rhinitis, sneezing, eye irritation — common with Cladosporium, Aspergillus/Penicillium

Hypersensitivity

Hypersensitivity pneumonitis from prolonged occupational or residential exposure

Mycotoxins

Stachybotrys produces mycotoxins associated with severe health outcomes. IARC Group 1 carcinogens.

Service Menu

Three AIHA-LAP Accredited Methods.

Air · Surface · Bulk — each answers a different question about mold in your building.

Air Sampling (Spore Trap)

ASTM D7391-20 · AIHA-LAP EMLAP

Media
Cassette (Air-O-Cell or equivalent)
When
IAQ screening · Post-remediation clearance · Baseline comparison · Occupant complaints
Answers
Is mold airborne? At what concentration? What genera?
Turnaround
3–5 business days

Surface Sampling (Tape Lift)

ASTM D7658-17(2021) · AIHA-LAP EMLAP

Media
Tape lift slide (lab-supplied)
When
Visible staining on walls, ceilings, floors · HVAC registers · Post-remediation clearance
Answers
Is surface growth fungal? What genera? How dense?
Turnaround
3–5 business days

Bulk Sampling (Tape Lift / Direct)

ASTM D7658-17(2021) · AIHA-LAP EMLAP

Media
Tape lift or physical sample in container
When
Suspected mold on building materials · Drywall · Insulation · Ceiling tile · Pre-demolition
Answers
What fungal species are growing on this material? What is the contamination level?
Turnaround
3–5 business days

Decision Guide

Which Sampling Method Is Right for Your Job?

Match your situation to the correct method before you pull a sample.

Musty odor, occupant symptoms, or IAQ complaint — no visible growth Airborne spores are the exposure pathway — air sampling quantifies actual occupant exposure
Air Sampling (Spore Trap)
Visible staining, discoloration, or suspected surface growth on walls, ceiling, or HVAC Tape lift confirms whether visible growth is fungal, identifies genus, and documents contamination for remediation scope
Surface Tape Lift
Water-damaged drywall, insulation, or ceiling tile — pre-demolition or during remediation Direct examination of bulk material confirms contamination level and genus before workers disturb it
Bulk Tape Lift
Post-remediation clearance — contractor needs to confirm mold was successfully removed Clearance requires both: air sampling confirms no elevated spores, surface tape lift confirms no residual growth
Air + Surface (Combo)
Full mold assessment — IH or consultant documenting building-wide fungal conditions Comprehensive assessment: air establishes exposure baseline, surface maps visible contamination, bulk characterizes material involvement
Air + Surface + Bulk
Regulatory Triggers

When Is Mold Testing Required?

Four situations that mandate or strongly indicate testing — each with a different driver.

Water Damage & Flooding

  • Any water intrusion event creates mold risk within 24–48 hours
  • Insurance adjusters increasingly require air sampling before and after remediation
  • IICRC S520 standard recommends pre- and post-remediation testing

Real Estate & Pre-Occupancy

  • NJ real estate disclosure requirements cover known mold conditions
  • Pre-purchase or pre-occupancy air sampling protects buyers and landlords
  • HUD-assisted housing: mold conditions must be documented and remediated

Schools, Daycares & Healthcare

  • Immunocompromised occupants at significantly elevated risk from airborne spores
  • EPA Tools for Schools guidance recommends IAQ testing including fungal sampling
  • Post-HVAC cleaning or renovation — clearance air sampling confirms occupant safety

Remediation & Restoration

  • IICRC S520: clearance testing required to document successful mold remediation
  • Post-remediation air sampling must show spore levels comparable to outdoor reference
  • Clearance report limits post-project contractor liability
Testing after water damage is not optional — it’s the difference between documented clearance and an undisclosed mold condition.
Process

How It Works — Four Steps.

From kit order to certified analytical report.

01

Order Your Kit

Select your method: air cassettes, tape lift slides, or both. IRIS ships pre-labeled media, COC form, and pre-paid FedEx label to your door.

Order Kit →
02

Collect & Complete COC

Air: attach cassette to pump at breathing zone, run 10–25 L. Surface/Bulk: apply tape lift per protocol. Complete COC with site info and sample location.

03

Ship Overnight

Drop at any FedEx location. Pre-paid label included. No refrigeration required for spore trap and tape lift samples.

04

Receive Your Report

Certified report identifies fungal genera, spore counts (air), and contamination level. AIHA-LAP accredited. Results compared to outdoor reference where applicable.

Every kit includes: Air-O-Cell cassettes (air) · Tape lift slides (surface/bulk) · COC form · Pre-paid overnight FedEx label
