Step By Step Guide

Sample Collection

Note: You cannot be sure that a material contains asbestos by just looking at it with a naked eye. Therefore, treat all suspect material as if they contain asbestos.

  • Shut down any heating or cooling systems to minimize the spread of any released fibers.
  • Do not disturb the material any more than is needed to take a small sample.
  • Wet the material using a fine mist of water containing a few drops of detergent before taking the sample. The water/detergent mist will reduce the possibility of releasing asbestos fibers.
  • Carefully cut/scrape a piece from the entire depth of the material using, for example, a small knife, corer, or other sharp objects.
  • Cut/scrape only a small piece of the material. All materials can be grouped into two categories: friable, i.e. the material can be crushed into powder by hand (e.g Acoustic ceiling spray), and nonfriable (e.g. Floor tile, Siding). These amounts are adequate for testing:

For friable samples – 1 teaspoon

For nonfriable samples – 1 square inch piece

  • Place the small piece into a clean container (for example, a ZipLock bag). Tightly seal the container after the sample is in it.
  • Use a damp paper towel to clean up any material on the outside of the container or around the area sampled.
  • Label the container with an ID number (for example, Sample #1)
  • Use a damp paper towel to clean up any material on the outside of the container or around the area sampled.

Special Notes

  1. When collecting samples, three “materials” from different locations are strongly recommended if the area covers more than 1,000 sq. ft. Please call for pricing details, as analysis methodology may vary by state and local regulations.
  2. When sampling the mastic or glue/adhesive under floor tile or linoleum, it’s important to note that this is considered a separate sample and is subject to a separate charge. Do not scrape the adhesive; instead, submit an approximately square-inch-sized sample with the adhesive attached. As long as the adhesive is visible under the flooring material, we’ll separate it ourselves. IMPORTANT Please call for specific pricing.
  3. For vermiculite insulation, it is recommended to collect at least three cup-sized samples from different areas, such as the attic floor or the bottom part of a wall cavity. Testing three samples from different spots is suggested to ensure accuracy. Pricing may vary by state and local regulations; please call for details.

Important Note on NOB Samples (Non-Friable Organically Bound Materials)

According to EPA, DOL, and local regulations, if non-friable organically bound (NOB) materials such as caulking, roofing, glue, flooring, and similar materials test negative using Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM), they must automatically undergo Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) testing. This additional analysis is mandatory and will increase the cost of testing.

For more information, please refer to the following resources:

EPA Asbestos Regulations

DOL Asbestos Standards

Please call for pricing and further information on testing methods specific to your state.

Environmental Protection Agency regulations informs that the laboratory must analyze the materials per layer. Each layer will be individually charged. “Split Material” is one (1) or more layer(s) attached to a sample.
