How to Collect Your Sample

Collecting and packaging the sample

Follow these steps so your sample arrives safely and your result is defensible. If the material is friable or heavily contaminated, have a licensed professional collect it instead.

Safety first. Wet the material lightly to suppress fibers. Wear nitrile gloves and an N100 or P100 respirator. Do not dry-disturb suspected asbestos-containing material.

Prepare the area and collect a representative piece

Shut down any heating or cooling system so released fibers don’t spread, and disturb the material as little as possible. Lightly mist it with water containing a few drops of dish detergent, then use a clean, sharp tool to cut through the full depth so every layer is captured. Take a small amount of each distinct material — about a teaspoon of friable material, or a one-inch square of non-friable material — and keep each material in its own bag. Do not mix different materials.

Double-bag and seal

Place each sample in its own zip-seal bag, then seal that inside a second bag. Wipe down the outside of both bags with a damp cloth. One material per double-bag.

Label each bag

Mark each bag with the sample ID and the location it came from (e.g. “S1 — basement pipe wrap”). The label must match exactly what is on your chain-of-custody form.

Complete the chain-of-custody

List every sample ID, the material type, sample location, and the analysis needed (PLM, point count, or TEM). Note your required turnaround. Sign and date the form.

Drop off or ship

Receive your results

Standard PLM turnaround is 24–48 hours. Rush and same-day options are available. Results are emailed as a PDF with the signed chain-of-custody attached.

Material-Specific Notes

Special sampling situations

Some materials need extra care or a set number of samples. Check these before you collect.

Large areas (over 1,000 sq ft)

Take samples from several representative locations rather than a single spot, so the result reflects the whole area.

Mastic & adhesives

Submit any mastic or adhesive as a separate sample from the material bonded above it — the two layers are analyzed independently.

Vermiculite insulation

Collect about three cup-sized samples from different areas. Vermiculite needs a larger volume for reliable analysis.

NOB materials & TEM confirmation

For non-friable organically bound materials — floor tile, mastic, roofing, and caulk — a “none detected” PLM result should be confirmed by TEM, the method EPA recognizes as reliable for these matrices.
