Background

What Are PFAS?

The essentials — without the textbook.

  • Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances — over 12,000 synthetic chemicals used since the 1940s
  • Found in firefighting foam (AFFF), non-stick coatings, waterproof fabrics, food packaging, and industrial processes
  • They don’t break down — which is why they’re called “forever chemicals”
  • Linked to cancer, thyroid disruption, immune suppression, and reproductive harm
  • EPA finalized Maximum Contaminant Levels (MCLs) for six PFAS in drinking water in April 2024 — the first federal limits ever set

Decision guide

Which Panel Is Right for Your Job?

Match your site condition to the correct method — fast.

School, office building, or municipal water — SDWA/EPA compliance baseline Matches regulatory reporting requirement. The standard entry-level PFAS test for drinking water systems under federal mandate.
PFAS-8 (Method 537.1)
Near chemical plant, airport, or known GenX/short-chain release Captures short-chain compounds and GenX that 537.1 misses. Required when site history or proximity suggests short-chain PFAS exposure.
PFAS-14 (Method 533)
Phase II ESA, groundwater monitoring, or industrial discharge Covers non-drinking water matrices — required for NPDES and site investigations. Widest regulatory acceptance for environmental media.
PFAS-24 (Method 8327)
AFFF / firefighting foam impacted site AFFF contains PFOS/PFOA and dozens of precursors — widest compound coverage needed. Used at airports, military sites, fire training areas.
PFAS-24 (Method 8327)
Field sampling requirements

Collection Requirements

PFAS sampling has strict protocols — these are non-negotiable.

USE

  • HDPE or polypropylene containers (lab-supplied)
  • Nitrile gloves — change between each sample
  • Field blank: one per sampling event
  • Trip blank: travels with samples from lab to field and back
  • Chain of Custody (COC) completed before shipment
  • Overnight shipment with ice packs (cooled to 4°C)

DO NOT USE

  • Teflon (PTFE) tubing, caps, or fittings — leaches PFAS into sample
  • Standard lab glass containers
  • Latex gloves — contain fluorinated compounds
  • Tap water as a field blank — may contain PFAS itself
  • Warm or ambient temperature shipment
  • Containers not pre-cleaned and certified by lab
Every IRIS kit includes: pre-certified HDPE containers · COC forms · pre-paid FedEx overnight shipping label · sampling instruction card
