What the VOC Index Score Represents

The VOC Index is a normalized 0–500 score derived from real-time TVOC field readings collected by the SentinelAir Pro™ in mg/m³. Rather than presenting raw concentration values, the score translates measurements into a simple, actionable scale — making it easy to compare readings across rooms, floors, and building zones without requiring technical interpretation.

Outdoor Baseline — The Control Sample

Every investigation begins with an outdoor air reading taken away from building entrances, exhaust vents, and traffic. This establishes the ambient background VOC level for that day and location — the baseline. Indoor readings are then interpreted relative to this control. An indoor score meaningfully above the outdoor baseline is a stronger indicator of an internal emission source than the absolute number alone.

Scoring Logic & Decision Trigger

If indoor scores remain near the outdoor baseline, no further action is typically warranted. When indoor readings exceed the baseline — particularly in specific zones — the score pattern guides source investigation. Scores in the Elevated or High range trigger Tedlar bag collection for laboratory GC/MS analysis to identify the specific compounds and concentrations present.
